Artist Manifesto
All About Sean Gilligan
As a young queer Artist, I set out to explore ideas surrounding sensuality , fashion , time and place. My paintings and drawings investigate themes of sexuality, gender, and human emotion through a positive lens of representation. These art works act as extensions of my own being, reflecting my ever-changing mindset and the desire to celebrate subjects that are often frowned upon.
Inspired heavily by my fascination with the camp and kitsch nature of the 18th century Rococo period, I attempt to pay homage to the stylistic paintings of the time. Drawing from my ongoing research into this specific era of mid-18th to early 19th century European figurative painting and drawing . I attempt to to understand my place within the great canon of figurative painters. Rather than trying to only recreate the visual language of the past, I also look to a multitude of artistic source, such as the golden age of Hollywood, spanning from the 1920s to the 1960s.
